Prince byl americký zpěvák, skladatel, multiinstrumentalista a hudební producent. Jeho tvorba zahrnovala širokou škálu stylů — funk, soul, R&B, rock, pop, new wave i jazz. Byl průkopníkem tzv. minneapolisského zvuku a na většině svých nahrávek hrál všechny nástroje sám.
Kompilace The Very Best of Prince vyšla v roce 2001 u vydavatelství Warner Bros. Records a obsahuje 17 skladeb, které všechny vyšly jako singly z jeho studiových alb mezi lety 1979 a 1991. Album dosáhlo posmrtně první příčky amerického žebříčku Billboard (květen 2016) a získalo platinový certifikát za přibližně 2,9 milionu prodaných kopií v USA. Mezi zastoupenými skladbami jsou americká čísla jedna When Doves Cry, Let's Go Crazy, Kiss a Cream, dále pak Purple Rain, 1999, Little Red Corvette či Raspberry Beret.
