Grateful Dead byla americká rocková skupina proslulá eklektickým stylem, který spojoval prvky rocku, folku, blues, jazzu, country a psychedelie. Proslula improvizacemi během živých vystoupení a oddanou fanouškovskou základnou známou jako „Deadheads“.
Album Grateful Dead vyšlo 24. září 1971 u vydavatelství Warner Bros. Records jako jejich druhé koncertní album na dvojvinylu. Přestože bylo publikováno bez názvu, je obecně známé pod označením „Skull and Roses“. Stalo se prvním albem skupiny oceněným zlatou deskou od RIAA a až do vydání kompilace Skeletons from the Closet zůstávalo jejich nejprodávanějším titulem. Toto jubilejní vydání nabízí 11 skladeb nahraných živě v New Yorku a San Francisku, remasterovaných na 180gramovém vinylu, mezi nimi Bertha, Playing in the Band nebo osmnáctiminutovou The Other One.
V době vydání alba tvořili Grateful Dead Jerry Garcia, Bob Weir, Phil Lesh, Bill Kreutzmann, Mickey Hart a Ron „Pigpen“ McKernan.
