Philip Glass je americký skladatel a pianista, jeden z nejvýznamnějších tvůrců konce 20. století. Jeho tvorba je spojena s minimalismem a vyznačuje se repetitivními strukturami a vrstvením motivů. Glass sám raději mluví o hudbě s repetitivními strukturami než o minimalismu. Patří mezi přední skladatele tohoto směru vedle Steva Reicha, Terryho Rileyho a Johna Adamse.
Kompilace Essential na čtyřech LP shromažďuje reprezentativní výběr Glassovy tvorby napříč žánry.
