Bob Dylan je americký písničkář, hudebník a držitel Nobelovy ceny za literaturu, který už šest desetiletí významně ovlivňuje populární hudbu a kulturu. Jeho tvorba z 60. let zahrnuje hymny občanských hnutí jako „Blowin' in the Wind“ či „The Times They Are A-Changin'“.
Kompilace The Essential Bob Dylan vyšla roku 2000 jako úvodní titul série The Essential vydavatelství Columbia. Tento dvoudiskový set přináší 32 skladeb z více než třiceti let Dylanovy tvorby — od folkové „Blowin' in the Wind“ (1963) přes šestiminutový rockový milník „Like a Rolling Stone“ (1965) až po „Things Have Changed“ (1999). Zachycuje tak proměny umělce, jenž z folkového muzikanta přešel k elektrické rockové podobě svého díla.
