Depeche Mode je elektronická formace původem z anglického Basildonu, založená v roce 1980. Skupina se stala jednou z nejúspěšnějších a nejvlivnějších představitelů synth-popu a nové vlny, se silným dopadem na moderní elektronickou hudbu.
Kompilační The Singles 81>98 vyšla v roce 2001 u Sony Music jako trojdiskový boxset obsahující singlovou tvorbu skupiny mezi lety 1981 a 1998. Vydání spojuje dva samostatné tituly – The Singles 81>85 a The Singles 86>98 – a nabízí celkem 38 skladeb. Kolekce pokrývá celou éru, kdy skupina postupně přešla od raných syntezátorových písní jako Just Can't Get Enough k monumentálním hitům Personal Jesus a Enjoy the Silence. Boxset zachycuje vývoj zvuku Depeche Mode od new wave experimentů ke stále sofistikovanějšímu syntezátorovému rocku.
V době vydání této kompilace tvořili skupinu Dave Gahan, Martin L. Gore, Andrew Fletcher a Vince Clarke.
